Description:
Large ‘Swatow-type’ porcelain serving dish, painted in polychrome enamels. This large serving dish has rounded sides, a narrow flat up-turned rim and an inverted foot ring. It is covered inside and out with a dove-grey glaze and painted in red, turquoise and black enamels. In the centre a male bird, with red comb and wattle, and a female bird are shown, flying among giant-size flowering shrubs. In the cavetto two chicken-legged dragons pursue flaming pearls among three peaked mountains, ‘ruyi’ clouds and bamboo leaves. The rim is painted with a spiral and line border. Kiln grit smothering the base testifies to the coarse production methods employed for making such ‘Swatow-type’ table wares. Extensive conservation work has been carried out on this dish, and a section missing from the rim has been filled and painted.
