Description:
Porcelain dish with underglaze blue decoration. This shallow dish has a sunken centre, rounded sides and a flat upturned rim. It stands on a thick foot ring to which much grit has adhered during the firing process. In the centre is a design of an untrammelled young immortal dancing barefoot beneath a branch of flowering prunus. He has a double gourd, and a string of coins tied to his belt. His accompanying toad also has a gourd strapped to its back. Around the rim are two bands of alternating blue-and-white checks. The base and back are glazed.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:The immortal is the benevolent Daoist deity, Liu Hai. He is a popular symbol of financial acumen and success because of his astute use of money. According to legend he coaxed his magic three-legged wart-backed toad out of a well using a string of cash as bait. Such dishes were particularly popular in Japan where their flaws – rough potting, gritty base and warped form – were appreciated. This chequered border was first introduced in the Tianqi era and appears to have been confined to this type of dish with a flat rim.
