Description:
Porcelain dish with ‘kraak’-type underglaze blue decoration. This finely potted dish has lobed sides with a flattened upturned lobed rim and a low tapering foot. In contrast to BM Franks. 776, which is decorated with symbols of long life and masculinity, this dish is ornamented with symbols of longevity, fertility and femininity. The centre shows a woman seated in a garden on a stool in front of a large screen and table on which a vase containing coral and a brush pot are placed. Radiating from this central medallion are eight panels, with opposite pairs of pomegranates, camellias, peaches, and repeated camellias, separated by eight narrow panels with tassels. The exterior of the dish is decorated with alternating panels of ‘ruyi’ and peaches and with further ‘ruyi’. The base is glazed.
