The shape derives from contemporary Northern Song lacquer, gold and silver wares. The thickened rim and the lines dividing the petals are characteristic of silverware and other Song ceramics. Potters supported the dish on a three-pronged firing support and the base has three large, coarse spur marks showing where it was removed and where the glassy glaze has pooled. These spur marks are much larger and rougher than those left on imperial wares made at the Ru (case 53) and guan (case 54) kilns of north and south China.
