Period:Ming dynasty Production date:1590-1620 (circa)
Materials:porcelain
Technique:glazed, moulded, underglazed,
Subjects:fruit musical instrument
Dimensions:Diameter: 37 centimetres Height: 6.50 centimetres
Description:
Porcelain dish with ‘kraak’-type underglaze blue decoration. Made by pressing clay into a mould with lobed sides and rim, this dish has a broad flat upturned rim with a rough edge. It stands on a low tapering foot ring which characteristically is littered with grit from the kiln floor. It is painted in ‘kraak’ style with a dark blue design of a shallow tripod bowl overflowing with peaches and objects placed on a garden table. Filling the space between the lobed frame surrounding this scene and the edge of the cavetto are alternating scale and maze patterns. The cavetto and rim are treated as a single space and are covered with eight large radiating panels separated by narrower panels. Peaches alternate with auspicious motifs such as a gourd, a leaf fan, a drum and a scroll in the larger panels. In the narrower panels brocade balls are depicted in cartouches with borders of alternating maze or scales. Outside eight roundels are shown containing flower heads divided by thin strips painted with a horizontal line above a vertical one. The base is glazed.
