Description:
Blue-and-white plate with a biblical scene. In the foreground the young Jesus is being baptised in a river by John (‘the Baptist’), a preacher who practised this form of baptism before it became a Christian custom. In the background the Spirit of God is descending in form of a dove. The scene is surrounded by a diaper border with Chinese landscape panels and by a dense border of flowers and fruit with four angels hidden among it and a bird opposite the cartouche, painted in a style reminiscent of Dutch Delft ware.

Comments:Harrison-Hall and Krahl 1994:Although Christian emblems appeared already on Chinese porcelain made for the Portuguese during the Ming dynasty (see, for example, BM 1979.1217.1, BM Franks. 154, BM Franks. 1397A), this large plate is one of the earliest pieces illustrating a scene from the Bible as described in a verse of the New Testament, in the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 3, verse 16, to which reference is made in a cartouche on the rim (abbreviated to ‘Mat. 3.16’):.This decoration appears also on a dish in the Mottahedeh collection (Howard and Ayers, 1978, vol. I, pl. 306), and on another in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (Scott, 1993, pl. 8). Another dish with the same design painted in red enamel and gold is also in the British Museum (BM Franks. 597).
