Description:
Porcelain dish with underglaze blue decoration. This dish has rounded sides and an everted rim with a tapering foot. A duck in a lotus pond is painted within a double ring in the centre and around the well are further ducks, water weeds and clumps of lotus. Outside are the Three Friends of Winter: prunus, pine and bamboo. The base is marked with a six-character Jiajing reign mark in a double circle.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:In China the mandarin duck, like the goose, symbolizes married bliss because it was mistakenly believed that the bird takes one partner for life. Both the ducks and the plants are emblems of loyalty and camaraderie.
