Description:
Porcelain dish with incised, green, aubergine and yellow enamel decoration on the biscuit. This dish has rounded sides and a tapering foot ring. It is incised with two open-jawed dragons chasing each other, among clouds, circling a flaming pearl. These dragons are enamelled on the biscuit in aubergine on a green ground. Outside the dish is enamelled yellow. A Tianqi six-character reign mark is placed in a double ring in underglaze blue on the base. The base is typical of the Tianqi era, pitted with chatter marks. Extensive conservation work has been required for this badly broken dish.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:With its yellow back, this dish is an early example of enamelling directly on to a biscuit-fired body rather than on to a glaze, a technique which was to become extremely popular in the Qing period. Reign-marked pieces from the Tianqi and Chongzheng reigns are comparatively rare. An identical dish which is also broken is in the Palace Museum, Beijing. Another complete dish of this type is in the Baur Collection, Geneva.
