Description:
‘Famille rose’ covered custard cup and plate with an English coat of arms of Lawrence, granted November 1652, “Ermine a cross raguly gules, a canton ermines”; crest, “Two trunks of a tree raguly in saltire environed with a chaplet vert”; impaling Ilbery, “Argent a chevron sable between three heronsw proper”. These Lawrence arms were borne by the Lord Mayor of London in 1664. The Ilberys were a merchant family of London, Reading in Berkshire, Biscay in Spain, and Calcutta. The set consists of a small plate, squat cup with twisted handle with leaf terminals and cover with a berry-shaped knob. It is painted predominantly in gold and sea-green enamels with a coat of arms, surrounded by thin ornamental borders. The rims of both plate and cover are further decorated with a border of joined gold trefoils and a plain sea-green enamel band.

Comments:Harrison-Hall and Krahl 1994: The coat of arms has been identified as Lawrence impaling Ilbery (Howard, 1974, p.645). This type of covered cup was used to serve custard, a dessert made from milk, eggs and sugar, or similar sweets. The shape is much rarer than tea or coffee cups and is also known in English glass and silver.
