Description:
Porcelain cup stand with incised design and green glaze. This cup stand was made by pressing leather-hard clay into a mould. It has lobed sides, a flattened out-turned rim with a thickened bracket-lobed edge and a flat unglazed base cut with a very narrow foot. In the centre is a raised circular ridge in which a cup would have rested. The ridge is decorated with mini lappets. In the centre is a single chrysanthemum spray. Surrounding this in concentric circles is a band of composite flower scroll; the rim is decorated with classic classic scroll. It is covered with a high-quality green glaze.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:This type of decoration may be seen on blue-and-white and underglaze red porcelains from Jingdezhen dating to the Hongwu era, such as a blue-and-white cup stand excavated at Dongmentou, Zhushan, Jingdezhen, in 1994. Cup stands of this type were made to serve wine. They support a small straight-sided cup with a slightly recessed base cut with a narrow foot. Such cups have now also been excavated in the Hongwu stratum at Dongmentou, Zhushan, Jingdezhen, decorated in underglaze blue.
