Description:
Porcelain cup stand with bracket-lobed rim and underglaze blue decoration. This cup stand was made by pressing leather-hard clay into a mould. It has lobed sides, a flattened out-turned rim with a thickened bracket-lobed edge and a flat unglazed base cut with a very delicately potted foot ring. In the centre is a raised circular ridge in which a cup would have originally rested. It is painted in underglaze blue with a stylized flower head in the centre. The ridge is decorated with a ruyi-head border. Surrounding this in concentric circles is a band of blooming lotus viewed from different angles, eight formal lotus viewed from different angles in the cavetto and classic scroll on the rim. The edge of the rim is painted with key-fret and the exterior with formal lappets.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:Cup stands of this type were made to serve wine. They support a small straight-sided cup with a slightly recessed base cut with a narrow foot. Such cups and cup stands, decorated in underglaze blue, have now been excavated in the Hongwu strata at Dongmentou, Zhushan, Jingdezhen. Cup stands of this type are made with minor variations to the design; for example, one in the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities, Stockholm, has a lingzhi spray in the centre in place of the stylized flower. They were also made at Jingdezhen in underglaze red (see BM 1928.0718.2) and with a celadon glaze and incised decoration at the Longquan kilns (see BM 1969.1108.1). The porcelain cups and stands were undoubtedly made after a silver or lacquer prototype.
