Description:
Porcelain cup with everted mouth rim, tapeing sides, and straight, low footring. There are four medallions of linghzi fungus with floral frames in Doucai style with underglaze blue outlines and washes and overglaze red, green and yellow enamel on the exterior, and double lines on the mouth and footring. There is a mark in underglaze blue on the base.

Coloured enamels of the Chenghua period are lighter and more delicately applied than these. Archaeologists’ discovery of a rubbish heap of a large number of broken and rejected genuine Chenghua porcelains at the imperial kiln site at Jingdezhen revolutionised scholars’ knowledge of patterns and forms of doucai . This example was made in the sixteenth rather than the fifteenth century.
