Comments:Published PDF date : Ming Jiajing 1522-1566 Room 95 label text:PDF 562Cup with red glazePotters applied a six-character underglaze blue reign mark of the Jiajing period to the base and then covered the whole cup in a transparent glaze. It was then covered with an iron-red glaze and fired at a lower temperature to fix this red colour. In the sixteenth century, potters generally made low-fired overglaze iron-red monochromes rather than high-fired copper-red porcelains as they were much easier to control and caused less wastage when completing imperial orders. Iron-red sits nearer to the surface over the glaze, and appears rather matt.
