Period:Ming dynasty Production date:1488-1505 (Red enamel added later)
Materials:porcelain
Technique:glazed, painted, underglazed,
Dimensions:Diameter: 9.50 centimetres Height: 4 centimetres
Description:
Porcelain conical cup with monochrome iron-red glaze. Thinly potted and attractively proportioned, this small conical cup flares outwards at the rim. Inside the tapering foot, filling the whole base, is an underglaze blue six-character Hongzhi reign mark in a single ring. The base rises to a nipple in the centre. Outside the cup is covered with a mottled iron-red monochrome glaze which was probably added later in the Ming dynasty. It has two hairline cracks from the rim as well as minor chips.
IMG
Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:It is very unlikely that the red enamel is original. No other monochrome red wares of this type and date have been published at the time of writing and none has been discovered at Jingdezhen. The colour was added later to enhance the cup’s rarity value.
