Comments:Rawson 1995:With the decline and demise of the Liangzhu culture came the gradual disappearance of the ‘cong’. Never again were they to be made of such fine quality or in such numbers. The contexts in which ‘cong’ appear in other cultures show that the functions of, and meanings attached to, Liangzhu ‘cong’ almost certainly disappeared along with the culture. From the late Neolithic period, western Shaanxi will be the centre of an industry of plain undecorated ‘cong’. Jades from this area can be recognised by their distinctive brightly coloured stones. Similar pieces have been found at Shaanxi Chang’an Shangquan and at Fengxiang.
