On both coins the inscription reads Taiping Tianguo (The Heavenly Kingdom of the Taipings) which was a serious threat to the Qing government. The Taiping leader, Hong Xiuquan, insisted that the character guo 國 (‘kingdom’) should be writtten with the element wang 王 (‘king’) as it was only fitting that a kingdom should be ruled by the king. [1883,0802.1579]. Hong Xiuquan had started the Rebellion following a vision in which he saw himself as the younger brother of Jesus Christ, with a mission to save China. The trigram (long line, broken line, broken line) in the character guo 国 can be interpreted as ‘younger brother’. [1992,0227.4]
