Description:
A woman’s ceremonial coat (sleeveless) / over-gown/ a ‘sikok’? [Very similar in cut and patterning to As1903,1017.3 and As1992,16.1.] Made from brown silk (?) velvet cloth. Centre front opening; square cut armholes. Tapered polychrome panels inserted either side of opening, near side vents and wide panel at centre back [16.5 cms wide]. Narrow silk (?) velvet bands in tones of yellow, brown, green, blue, lilac and brown. Stitched to shoulders is red and blue silk brocaded cloth, a stylized floral pattern, worked on the diagonal (with gold- and silver-coloured metal-wrapped thread). Side vents and hemline piped with red satin silk thread. Coat lined with printed tabby cotton cloth: red and green (with natural cream) birds, butterflies, roses and other flowers on a blue ‘ground’.
