Comments:The group of ten wax prints registered as 2018,2036.278 to 287 was put together to complement the collection already in the British Museum of prints with political or social messages. The common theme of this group is their adoption of themes from contemporary life, with especial reference to technological advances. The cloths were found by Harvey Derrien, who asked his contacts in Africa to look out for them. The dating and often the origin of the prints is often uncertain, but they were all designed and printed for the market in Africa itself. Some were contemporary when acquired, but others were found in dealers’ old stock. The cloths were cut down from the full lengths but they are not samples (and therefore unlike 2018,2036.288 to 295).
