Comments:Text from Eth Doc 1606 [ letter from the Donor to the Director of the British Museum dated 24th February 1911]: ‘The piece of embroidered cloth … was worked quite on their own design by a woman of the Ju [?] tribe of South China, concerning which I have recently sent an article to the Editor of the Geographical Magazine of the Royal Geographical Society. It was used by this tribe as the sign of betrothal, the women waring it over the head, and the men with the design covering the broad part of the back, and it is very hard to induce either party to sell one.’
