Description:
‘Fang ding’-shaped porcelain incense burner with ‘fahua’-type decoration. Based loosely on an archaic bronze vessel of the Shang or Western Zhou dynasty, this heavily potted ‘fang ding’ [square censer] stands on four solid legs with flanged edges. Its thick flared rectangular handles are joined to the censer above relief-moulded lion masks and ‘ruyi’ cloud motifs. It is decorated in ‘fahua’ style with a design outlined in raised trailed slip and with turquoise, dark blue and yellow enamels, following the Jingdezhen style. A triangular brocade of a honeycomb pattern with ‘ruyi’ and with stylized coins above on one side and lozenges on the other hangs from the shoulder. This example is glazed inside at the top only and not on the base or edges of the feet.
