Comments:Zwalf 1985Long-handled censers were common in China during the Tang period, as in contemporary Japan. Banner paintings from Dunhuang show them carried by priests and Bodhisattvas. This handsome example was constructed with several pieces: a long strap handle angling down at the end to accommodate a small lion with a ring through its jaws; at the other end, adjoining the bowl proper, a flat pomegranate-shaped appliqué ornamented with two bosses; a detachable liner (there was probably once a pierced cover); and below, bolted on, a lobed base decorated with turned concentric bands.
