Description:
Porcelain ‘ding’ (tripod incense burner), decorated with underglaze blue and overglaze polychrome enamels in ‘wucai’ style and with ground-down handles. Unusual in both form and decoration, this round censer stands on three tubular legs which are pierced in order to ensure the escape of gases during firing, and thus preventing it from buckling in the kiln. Originally it would have been fitted with semi-circular side handles with pierced and moulded decoration rather like the handles on BM 1938.0524.23. Inside, a broad ring around the centre is wiped free of glaze. Outside the censer is moulded with a design of a single composite flower scroll and with individual flowers moulded on the legs. These designs were then painted in underglaze blue and overglaze polychrome enamels (‘wucai’). The rim is decorated with a band of key-fret and the base bears a six-character Wanli reign mark in a double ring.
