Description:
Pair of candlesticks with hollow bell-shaped bases, a ring around the centre surmounted by a cup which contains a tapering tube with an oval opening on one side. Base section is decorated with two four-clawed dragons confronting each other over a single flaming pearl, above is a band of foaming waves. The dragon’s scales are marked in black enamel and the background is filled with polychrome enamel lingzhi style clouds. Two butterflies and flowers around the central ring, a further butterfly painted on the tapering tube. Around the cup are emblems associated with literati: books, two scroll paintings, a ding (tripod incense burner) and fan, and a table with a tub of narcissus and a vase containing arrows, branch coral and a feather. Trefoil pattern painted around the rim in pink, yellow, turquoise and red enamels.
