Comments:Barrass 2002:Sa Benjie created new characters that conveyed old meanings in an innovative series on the theme of ‘realization’. The Chinese term for realization is ‘jue wu’, which can be translated for ‘awakening’ as well. This particular concept is related to the Buddhist belief that only when there is nothing at all in your mind is the way clear for your spirit to arrive at true understanding. According to Zen Buddhism, if one can achieve absolute calm by letting one’s mind become void of all thought, the first thing to break through the ‘hole of stillness’ will be this sense of realization, its light coming from all directions. By combining both characters, the point he wanted to make to the viewer was that only when you have been ‘awoken’ to something that has happened are you able to ‘realize’ its significance. That is why the two characters are often deeply intertwined in these work. Sa Benjie’s new combined characters look strange and unorthodox, but in fact they contain a very suscint message.
