Description:
Large vertical panel with calligraphy, made of ink on paper. The dramatic character at its centre is’wu’, representing the concept of ‘nothingness’ that lies at the heart of Daoism. This character is written against a background of the first two chapters of the ‘Daodejing’. Its opening lines read: “The way that can be spoken of is not the constant way; / The name that can be named is not the constant name. / Nothingness is know as the beginning of Heaven and Earth; / Being is known as the mother of the myriad of creatures. / Therefore, always rid yourself of desires / in order to observe the secrets of the way; / But always allow yourself to have desires / in order to observe its manifestations”. In contrast to the central character, which is written with great strenght and force, the surrounding text has been rendered in a lively cursive script (草书) using a light-grey ink.

Comments:Barrass 2002:One of the strands of ancient Chinese philosophy that has increasingly interested Wang Dongling over recent years is Daoism, which is based on the teachings of Laozi, who is believed to have written or compiled the book know as ‘The Way and its Power’ (‘Daodejing’). This is Wang Dongling’s largest ever work on Daoism.
