Comments:Barrass, 2002:This is a version of the same text on one of the main works that Huang Miaozi contributed to the exhibition of Modernist Calligraphy held in Beijing in 1985. Reflecting the optimism of the time (the reformist course taken by Deng Xiaoping) and through a fresh approach to the rendering of ancient characters (the lyricism of the characters, written with speed and fluidity, and the interrelationships between them has to be noted), Huang Miaozi reinforces the message of this piece; that great changes are taking place in the world and in the thoughts of men.It is often assumed that the elephant has some symbolic significance associated with Chinese history and tradition. The artist, however, insists that the use of this motif was a mere whimsy, prompted by the fact that the character ‘xiang’ (‘manifestation’ or ‘phenomenon’) in the composition can mean ‘elephant’ and its shape vaguely resembles one.
