Comments:From the early 20th century until the Communist takeover in 1949 Shanghai commercial artists created thousands of colourful poster designs that formed an essential part of modern life in the city. Most of the posters featured images of fashionable beauties and were used as popular New Year prints. Hu Boxiang started designing calendar posters for the British American Tobacco Company (BAT) in 1917. His real passion however was photography. In 1928 Hu along with Lang Jingshan and other photographers formed the Chinese Photography Society. His sensitivity and ability to render light effects can be seen in this poster image.
