Description:
Ru stoneware brush-washer with flaring sides. The dish has a pale ash-grey body covered in thick blue-grey glaze with fine crackle and several tiny pin holes. Base and foot glazed with three small elliptical spur marks.

It was designed to stand on a writing desk filled with water to cleanse calligraphy or painting brushes. Potters fired Ru wares like this in kilns shaped like mantou (steamed bread buns) fuelled with wood. In AD 2000, more than fifteen kilns were discovered at the edge of the remote village of Qingliangsi, near Baofeng in Henan province. Two workshop areas, together with mounds of kiln debris and broken pots, were also unearthed, testifying to a short but intensive period of celadon production.
