Description:
Mountain-shaped porcelain brush-rest with underglaze blue and overglaze polychrome enamels in ‘wucai’ style. This crescent-shaped brush rest is moulded in the form of a three-peaked mountain. Each of the peaks is encircled by a dragon’s sinewy body with its mane cascading over the summit and with a band of waves and stylized rocks below. The glazed base is pierced by a single hole at one end and carries a six-character blue horizontal Wanli reign mark in a double rectangle. The decoration is painted in ‘wucai’ style with underglaze blue and overglaze red, yellow, green and black enamels. Designs of powerful dragons prancing above stylized rocks and waves were commonly used to decorate imperial robes in the Ming and Qing periods. Later Ming decorative arts are characterized by their intricate surface decoration and flamboyant use of colour.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:Five hundred brush rests in openwork design with three dragons among mountains in blue-and-white and in ‘wucai’ style were ordered in 1593, according to the “Jiangxi Sheng Da Zhi” [Annals of Jiangxi]. The present example was probably one of those. Similar examples are in the Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art, London, and in the Idemitsu Museum of Arts, Tokyo.
