Description:
Porcelain brush pot with ‘fahua’-type decoration. This cylindrical brush pot has an unusual form with a rolled lip and sits on a raised ring with a low flared foot. On either side it is decorated with orchids and rocks, outlined in raised slip and painted with white and turquoise enamels on an aubergine ground. The base and inside are glazed yellowish-white.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:In addition to forming an attractive ornament, this botanical motif symbolizes scholarly virtue and loyalty. It has been suggested by Julia Curtis that the orchid may have had political overtones for the scholar-literati class in the late Ming period.
