Description:
Lobed porcelain box and cover with underglaze blue, ‘wucai’-style polychrome enamels and a silver knob. This box has a deep twelve-lobed base and a matching flat cover with a thickened edge and a replacement silver knob. Its cover is divided into petal-like sections by undulating raised clay ribs. The silver knob is lobed with diamond-shaped openings around the side. In addition to its rare form, the decoration of the box is also seldom seen. Scenes of cats in different attitudes and dogs are portrayed in garden settings in underglaze blue and overglaze polychrome enamels (‘wucai’). Some cats are shown scrambling up bamboo, some sit in front of or hide behind ornamental screens, others scamper in the foreground with auspicious plants such as pine. There is a band of lotus scroll around the rim. The cover is different and is painted with alternating red and yellow budding and blooming flower sprays in each panel with dense scrollwork borders around the rim. It is glazed inside and on the base.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:Boxes of this type are extremely rare but recently an identical box was bought at auction for the Shanghai Museum. Their delicate and unusual shape is probably modelled after a contemporary Ming lacquer- or silver-ware box. Another example of a box of this shape but with figural decoration is in the Idemitsu Museum of Arts, Tokyo.
