Period:Ming dynasty Production date:1522-1566
Materials:porcelain
Technique:glazed, painted, underglazed,
Subjects:bird sun/moon
Dimensions:Length: 12.50 centimetres Length: 7.50 centimetres Width: 10.30 centimetres
Description:
Quatrefoil porcelain box with cover painted in overglaze red on a yellow ground. The cover, tray and foot ring of this rectangular box have indented corners, creating a quatrefoil shape. The flat top of the cover is slightly sunken in the centre and is decorated with a flying crane encircled by the sun and clouds, and by a ring of the ‘ba gua’ [Eight Trigrams] (see BM 1936.1012.192), contained within roundels with a double red line around the edge. Each side of the cover and tray has the same design of a crane in flight flanked by ‘ruyi’ clouds. The rims of the cover and tray, which do not fit together tightly, are painted with a variant of the classic scroll. Interestingly the crane on the north face of the cover is preparing for take-off whereas all the others are depicted in mid-flight. The base carries an underglaze blue six-character Jiajing reign mark arranged in two vertical rows of three characters without a border. Inside it is covered with a blue-tinged glaze. The tray has a large diagonal crack and is also repaired with long metal strips inside along the top edges. The lid has a hairline crack and its enamels have worn much more dramatically than those of the tray.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:A crane flying up to the sun can express the wish that the recipient will rise to high office. It is also a symbol of long life. The shape of the box is based on contemporary lacquer and silver ware.
