Description:
Cizhou-type box and cover painted in iron black on a cream slip under a turquoise glaze. This round stoneware Cizhou-type box has a domed cover with a round top which has sunk in the centre like a badly baked sponge cake. Its shallow tray has rounded sides, a low foot ring and an unglazed base which reveals a coarse dark brick-red body. The box is covered with a cream slip and painted in iron black, then covered with a thin lead-alkaline turquoise glaze. Around the edges of the cover and tray is a composite flower scroll with four alternating blooms. On the top a man is portrayed in a landscape beside a small pool in which a turtle swims. The figure has a moustache, beard and hair tied into a bun. He wears a cross-over long-sleeved robe and trousers. Surrounding this are a double ring and a band with double wavy lines. Inside, both tray and cover are covered with a misfired pinkish-grey crackled glaze.
