Description:
Two round porcelain boxes and covers with underglaze blue and overglaze polychrome enamels in ‘wucai’ style. They share the same form and decoration with minor variations. The boxes each have a shallow tray with rounded sides, a foot ring and a domed cover with a flat raised circular top. Around the outside of the tray they are all decorated with two flying male and female phoenix – one with a streaming tail, the other with a scrolling tail – separated by a yellow flower. Their covers show a bird flying towards its mate, which is perched on a fruiting branch with flowers. A band of red fruits and flowers adorns the sides. On the bases is an underglaze blue six-character Wanli reign mark in a ring.
