Description:
Wedge-shaped porcelain box and cover with underglaze blue and overglaze polychrome enamels in ‘wucai’ style. Originally this wedge-shaped box would have been one of a set of boxes arranged around a central cylindrical box and held within a lacquer, silver or bronze case. Consequently its sides are flat and the inner face is concave and the outer face convex. The flat cover fits well and has a small knob. On each face and on the cover are portrayed cavorting dragons encircling flaming pearls and there is a full-face dragon on the small inner edge. These are framed by thick and thin underglaze blue borders and are painted in ‘wucai’. Inside the box is plain but glazed. In the centre of the flat unglazed base is a glazed cartouche with an underglaze blue horizontal six-character Wanli reign mark in a double rectangle surrounded by a double frame.
