Description:
Quatrefoil porcelain box with cover painted in red enamel. As with BM 1925.0718.1, the cover, tray and foot ring of this rectangular box have indented corners, creating a quatrefoil shape. The flat top of the cover is painted with two trigrams in roundels arranged one above the other. One is the basic ‘yang’ symbol with three unbroken lines and the other the basic ‘yin’ symbol of all broken lines. These are flanked by a flying crane and a phoenix with a foliage tail and surrounded by ‘ruyi’ clouds. The edges of the top of the cover are outlined in double red lines and there are borders of ‘ruyi’ and tendril scroll around the sides of the cover and tray. On the base is an underglaze blue six-character Jiajing reign mark arranged in two vertical rows of three characters without a border. Inside the box is covered with a blue-tinged glaze.
