Period:Ming dynasty Production date:1643 (circa)
Materials:porcelain, blanc de chine,
Technique:glazed, moulded,
Subjects:flower
Dimensions:Diameter: 13.50 centimetres Height: 6 centimetres
Description:
‘Blanc de Chine’ box with moulded decoration and traces of glaze. This round box is mould-made with relief decoration of a rock and flowering chrysanthemum on the lid encircled by two raised bands between which is a band of half cash diaper. Around the edges of the lid is a scrolling border and the sides of the tray are vertically fluted. The base is flat and unglazed. Inside the cover is glazed but the tray is not glazed. It is possible that the two halves of this box were not originally intended to fit together but have been married from boxes of similar dimensions. The monochrome white glaze has been much eroded by the sea.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:The box was recovered from the Hatcher shipwreck, datable to 1643 (see BM 1984.0303.11a-b).
