Description:
Square porcelain box with underglaze blue decoration. This square box comprises a lid and a tray divided into four equal compartments. The lid is painted with a medallion showing two dragons chasing each other around a flaming pearl, surrounded by ‘ruyi’ clouds, with further ‘ruyi’ clouds at the lid’s edges and corners. Single sinewy dragons are similarly depicted along each of the sides. Two of the corners have been restored. Outside the tray is decorated with three roundels on each side containing prancing dragons in different attitudes similarly surrounded by ‘ruyi’ clouds. Inside the compartments are glazed and the top edges outlined in blue. The unglazed base has a central round depression which is glazed and marked beneath the glaze in blue with a six-character Longqing reign mark in a double ring.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:Compartments of equal size within the box may suggest that it was used for storing seals of office (see BM 1936.1012.193). A box of the same size and type with a variation to the design of the top of the cover is in the Shanghai Museum.
