Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:Monochrome aubergine glaze was popular in the Jiajing era, as were designs of mandarin ducks swimming in a lotus pond. According to the British Museum’s Register of Acquisitions, this box was collected by the donor, J. van Lier, in Ujung Pandang (formerly known as Makassar), a port along the south-western coast of the island of Sulawesi (formerly known as Celebes) in Indonesia. Indeed boxes have been found in great numbers m the south of Sulawesi, both those made in China and a number from the ‘Sawankhalok’ kilns in Thailand. These were used for powder, probably incense, kept as small dry pills, which were mixed with water for instant use. Most of the ceramics exported from China to Indonesia were low-quality wares Produced in Fujian province at kilns in, for example, Pinghe or Zhangzhou. Both the colour of the glaze and the porcelain body indicate that this box was made outside Jiangxi, probably in Fujian.
