Comments:Rawson 1992:In the early stages the shapes and decoration of lacquer pieces were borrowed from vessels and containers made of precious metals – first bronze, as in the Han dynasty, and then gold and silver from the Tang and Song. Completely plain, undecorated lacquer dishes and bowls were produced in the Song dynasty (AD 960-1279), often in flower shapes similar to those made in gold and silver as well as in white and green porcelain. Similarly, the technique of engraving fine linear designs on lacquer and then filling them in with gold (‘qiangjin’) began in the Song dynasty, following the model of the chased silver vessels of the Tang and Song.
