Round porcelain box and cover with underglaze blue, touches of overglaze green and yellow on a red enamel ground. This round box stands on a thick tapering foot ring and has a domed cover with a flat circular top. Where the tray and cover meet, both are thickened with a raised horizontal band. The box is decorated with a blurred underglaze blue design of four boys playing in a garden, with two pairs of dragons fighting over a flaming pearl around the sides of the cover and two dragons each chasing their own pearl around the outside of the tray, all among ‘ruyi’ clouds. The bands around the cover and tray are ornamented with an unusual flower scroll and there is scroll work around the foot. During the second firing two of the children’s trousers have been painted green, another yellow and the background red. Inside both box and cover are glazed and the base carries an underglaze blue six-character Wanli reign mark in a double ring. Hairline cracks are visible inside the cover.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:A lacquer box with ‘qiangjin’ decoration and of similar form to the present porcelain box was excavated from the Wanli emperor’s tomb, the Ding Ling. It is interesting that the inspiration for the form of this box comes from lacquer ware, as the decoration appears to be inspired by contemporary imperial textiles. An embroidered short robe, decorated with dragons either side of the front fastening and with designs of children playing, was also discovered in Ding Ling.
