Description:
Porcelain bowl with low curving sides, straight rim and recessed base. There are five lotus sprays, each with an offering above (flower, sacred mountain, fruit, white conch, shell and candlestick) in Doucai style with underglaze blue outlines and washes and overglaze red, green and yellow enamel on the exterior, and double lines in underglaze cobalt blue around the rim and foot. There is a mark in underglaze blue on the base.

Comments:Published PDF date : Ming Chenghua 1465-1487 Room 95 label text:PDF 767 Doucai cup with the ‘Five Treasures’Outside, this twice-fired shallow cup is decorated with underglaze blue and overglaze enamels in doucai style. The design is unusual and shows five lotuses supporting offerings. These are the 五珍寶(wuzhen bao ‘Five Treasures’: lotus, sacred mountain, peach, conch shell and candlestick). Potters at Jingdezhen made copies of this design in the Kangxi period (AD 1662–1722) (see PDF A711.) Genuine Chenghua porcelain has a mild yellow cast, is slightly irregular in form and the compositions of the motifs are well-balanced.
