Comments:The carved wooden stand is the original one, including circular elaborately carved pedestals. Na Zhiliang wrote: These two perfect white jade bowls were probably a wedding gift. The bowls have a musical ring to them and are devoid of any decoration. Qianlong, or later. Fitted wooden box. Jessica Rawson wrote: The bowls are a pair with identical forms. They slope outwards evenly to an everted lip, and stand on low footrings. Their shapes are perfectly balanced and they are exquisitely matched in colour and polish. Undecorated jade vessels in porcelain shapes, as here, probably represented the highest quality of eating and drinking utensils. Both the sumptuary laws, which restricted the use of jade vessels, and passages in novels that mention the use of jade cups and bowls for eating and drinking, make it evident that jade was highly valued and used for these purposes. Examples in the Gugong Bowyyuan, Beijing, illustrate the range of colours and decoration to be found on such pieces. Many such bowls were, indeed, probably made for the palace and the court. Formerly displayed in the Mint Museum, Charlotte, North Carolina, USA. See Rawson 1995, p.400, cat.no.29.13.
