Description:
Large porcelain bowl with underglaze blue decoration. This bowl has rounded lobed sides and a flaring rim with bracket-lobed edge. From each peak of the bracket to the top of the straight foot is a vertical rib. A scrolling dragon with two front legs and no claws, eating a leafy scroll, is depicted inside a roundel, while the rim is decorated with a border of lotus flowers and buds. Between the ribs on the outside are eight panels with fruit and flowers in medallions, and with scroll work at each corner and a diaper border above. The base is gritty and bears a four-character mark 大 明 年 造 ‘Da Ming nian zao’ [Made in the Ming dynasty].

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:A similar bowl with a Jiajing mark (1522-66) is in the Amaral Cobral Collection. Maria Antonia Pinto de Matos also mentions another Jiajing reign marked example in the Museu National da Arte Antiga. A third example is in the Topkapi Saray Museum, Istanbul.
