Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:The pomegranate is a symbol of fertility as a single fruit contains hundreds of seeds and the word for seed in Chinese is the same as the word for sons. Fruit and decorative objects with images of fruit were desirable as gifts between members of the elite, partly because of these symbolic associations and partly connected with the idea that fruit trees stood for the ideal of self-sufficiency.
