Carved ivory bowl with the scene of the Eight Daoist Immortals celebrating birthday for Shoulao, Star God of Longevity. The inverted neck bears shou (longevity) characters alternating with fu (happiness) characters.
IMG
Comments:The landscape is reminiscent of the scenes depicted on ceramics of the mid-seventeenth century. The precise use of this bowl is not obvious but similar objects have been identified as alms bowls. The inverted neck shape is certainly met in porcelain but is most unusual in other media. [Kerr, Allen & Shih 2016.]
