Description:
Square porcelain bowl with underglaze blue and overglaze aubergine, green, yellow and black enamels. Square porcelain bowls of this type were an innovation of the Jiajing emperor’s reign. This example has a deep bowl, a small square foot ring and four sides of equal size which flare out and are everted at the rim. Each face shows a five-clawed scaly dragon painted in aubergine enamel with green enamel mane, beard and furry shanks. These dragons alternately look forward with closed jaws and back with open jaws. In the background is ‘lingzhi’ scroll outlined in red and infilled in yellow enamel with a border of aubergine ‘ruyi’ heads below. The rim and foot are outlined with double lines and the join of bowl to foot has a single line in underglaze blue. Inside in the centre is a double square in underglaze blue which frames a dragon striding on its hind legs over a ‘lingzhi’ scroll in the same palette. The rim is decorated with a border of similar ‘lingzhi’ scroll edged on either side with double blue underglaze lines. The base is marked with a blue six-character Jiajing reign mark.
