Description:
Bowl with incised decoration and green glaze. This large heavily potted bowl has shallow rounded sides and a broad foot. The base is glazed apart from a ring for firing which has reoxidized on cooling to a typical orange brown. The bowl is incised inside and out and covered with a thick olive-green glaze. Inside in the cavetto and outside it is incised with peony scrolls with large blooms and in the centre with an impressed floral design in a cartouche. The outer rim is decorated with key-fret. This bowl has an Arabic drill mark on the base which records the name of a former owner, Sayyid Mohammed.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:Other bowls of this type are well known and are found in export contexts. For example, three similar green-glazed bowls are in the Topkapi Saray Museum in Istanbul. This bowl was collected in India by William Cummins (see BM 1963.0520.5).
