Description:
Deep bowl with incised decoration and green glaze. This large heavily potted bowl has rounded sides which flare out slightly towards the rim. The foot and base are glazed apart from a ring for firing. There is a chrysanthemum spray medallion in impressed relief in the centre, with a Chinese seal script character to the left of the flowers and incised peony scrolls inside with a classic scroll border at the outer rim. The Chinese character is 永 ‘yong’ [eternal, or everlasting].

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:Vessels with moulded inscriptions are comparatively rare but generally they carry an auspicious meaning. For example, there is a dish in the Topkapi Saray Museum, Istanbul, bearing the characters ‘Jin yu man tang’ [May gold and jade fill the hall].
