Five bats are a Chinese visual pun standing for the Five Blessings. These 五福 (wufu ‘Five Blessings) are 康 (kang ‘good health’); 壽 (shou ‘long life’) 富 (fu ‘wealth’), 德 (de ‘virtue’) and 考终命 (kao zhong ming ‘a natural death in old age’).
